‘Greeting Accessory’ is an ongoing one-year project in which Gabrielle Lai creates a GIF a day using PicMix, the unofficial Gen-Z sister of the now-decommissioned Bilnfee.com. The exhibition embeds these GIFs into physical space through digital photo frames, an MP4 player, and a curtain printed assemblage, as a means to examine digital folklore aesthetics and processes through customisation culture and the hallmark hardware of the early vernacular web.

Gabrielle Lai’s practice investigates the inextricable convergence of digital and physical realities, critically examining this enmeshment through both the image, and the interface. By navigating the increasingly obfuscated and recursive nature of online-offline space, she aims to question how it operates within a context of simulacra, hypersaturation, consumer culture and excess. This inquiry extends into the visual vernaculars of digital folklore and animated GIFs as a residual and participatory archive of image culture, most recently through Greeting Accessory, a project that reanimates customisation culture, amateur aesthetics, and the creative limitations of GIF-generator platform PicMix.
