Title
'AMSLER GRID'
An Amsler Grid is a diagnostic tool used to test optical distortion. Similarly, this two-person exhibition, featuring works by Michael Stavrou and Francis Lentz, explores the disconnect between objective reality and the viewer's subjective perception of it. Stavrou’s oil paintings, depicting scenes of violence and ego death, intersect with Lentz’s assemblages, which combine raw materials and flat images, both distorting their images. Ultimately, these visual obstructions upon their painted surfaces force the viewer to interrogate their detached acceptance of their perceived surroundings.
This exhibition took place in August 2025.

MEET THE ARTISTS
MICHAEL STAVROU
As an emerging Brisbane-based artist, Michael Stavrou conceptualises Pop Culture iconography and characters into detailed scenes or snapshots of points in time. He captures aesthetic value within otherwise generic objects or landscapes, often to contextualise or provide story to the images.
FRANCIS LENTZ
Francis Lentz is a Brisbane-based artist who explores the rich painting traditions of the likes of Edvard Munch and Peter Doig in the style of Neo-expressionism. Lentz uses these traditional European painting techniques through oil paint on canvas, delivering his own perspective on post-internet Australia.
